Frequently Asked Questions.

What makes your practice different?

Rooted Energy employs a distinctive approach that combines conventional and psychiatric medicine with integrative and functional medicine principles. Both Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. James are board-certified psychiatrists currently advancing their expertise through additional training at the Institute for Functional Medicine and Integrative Psychiatry Institute. They recognize the profound connection between physical and mental health while understanding that gastrointestinal, bioenergetic, hormonal, and immunological issues can often manifest as mental health concerns.

When a client presents with symptoms of depression or anxiety, they conduct an in-depth exploration to uncover the root causes behind those symptoms. They develop a personalized and comprehensive plan to help restore your physical and mental well-being. Their methodology extends beyond merely prescribing medication; it encompasses a holistic view of health that prioritizes lasting wellness.

Where are you currently seeing patients?

We are currently seeing patients located in California, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.

Do I need a primary care provider?

Yes, we recommend each patient have an established primary care provider. While we may incorporate lifestyle modifications and lab testing into our practice these are not to replace having regular visits with your primary care provider. We might need to collaborate with them regarding your physical health and communicate abnormal findings from the labwork obtained. Please bring any previously completed blood work and pertinent medical records to your first visit.

Can you prescribe me psychiatric medications/refill my medications?

Rooted Energy is dedicated to restoring health and partnering with clients on their wellness journeys. Along the way, we will recommend personalized interventions. These may include adjustments to your eating habits, increasing movement practices, suggesting herbal remedies, supplements, and counseling. We may prescribe psychiatric medications while we focus on restoring health through alternative methods. If you're considering tapering off an SSRI or SNRI, we are here to support you in that process safely.

We can prescribe and refill your psychiatric medications. Please be aware that we do not prescribe controlled substances, including stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin, and Vyvanse, as well as opioids and benzodiazepines such as alprazolam (Xanax), lorazepam (Ativan), clonazepam (Klonopin), and sleep medicines such as zolpidem (Ambien).

How do I schedule to see one of the doctors?

We invite you to complete the brief form located under “Services”. Once we receive your information, we will follow up with any necessary questions to confirm that we are well-suited to meet your needs. We understand how valuable your time is, and we want to ensure that we can provide the support you're looking for from the beginning. If we determine that we can assist you, we will promptly schedule an appointment for you with one of our doctors at the next available time that works for you.

How often will I need to be seen for follow-up?

Our primary goal is to help you optimize your health. We strive to equip you with the tools and strategies necessary to transition into a maintenance phase of your wellness journey. We may follow up with you several times on your path toward wellness. Should you need additional support in the future we are here to assist you in maintaining your progress and stability.

Is lab work required?

While labs are not mandatory, they can offer significant benefits. We recommend only those tests that we believe will enhance your physical and mental well-being. Our commitment is to provide high-value care by charging only the direct cost of the labs from our trusted provider, without any additional fees.

What is the cancellation policy?

We request that cancellations or rescheduled appointments be made at least 48 hours in advance. We require a 50% deposit when your initial intake is scheduled. This deposit is non-refundable, but it will be applied toward your initial visit. The remaining balance will be due at the time of service. There will be no deposits collected for follow-up visits.

Insurance/Out of Network reimbursement

At this time, we do not accept insurance. However, we can provide a superbill that can be submitted to your insurance company for reimbursement, typically at “out of network” rates.

Do you currently accept Medicare patients?

Please be advised that we do not participate in the Medicare program at Rooted Energy Women’s Functional Health. Unfortunately, at this time, we are not accepting patients that are receiving Medicare services. We encourage all Medicare patients to consult with their insurance providers regarding their options for care.
